Kansas is home to the National Festival of Breads, which is held every other June in Manhattan, Kan., and sponsored by Red Star Yeast, King Arthur Flour and Kansas Wheat.
The highlight of the festival is a baking competition, the nation’s only national amateur bread-baking contest. Four home baker finalists and four food blogger finalists show off their delicious home-baked goods during the event, preparing the recipes onsite and offering samples.
RaChelle Hubsmith of North Logan, Utah, won the home baker division with her Chai Ube Rosette Rolls. She also received the Public Choice Award. Click here for the recipe. Merry Graham of Newhall, California, won the food blogger division with her Blackberry Ginger Speculaas Danish Wreath. Check out all the top recipes from 2019 by requesting a recipe book.
Kansas Agri-Women supported the event in 2017 and 2019 by volunteering in the children’s educational area. This year, children — and adults — enjoyed seeing the process of how wheat is ground into flour. They are always surprised and impressed by a crop that can so quickly go from field to table.
